Take a Walk on the Wet Side — Alissa the Intern Explores the Eco-Side of Vieques Island

I can’t believe we’re already reaching the middle of July! Time has been flying by because we’ve stayed pretty busy here at Weddings in Vieques. I did have some free time lately that allowed me to do some more exploring on the island. I took three different eco-tours over the past couple weeks — all three were great tours you and your wedding guests can enjoy during your destination wedding weekend.

The first adventure I went on was the traditional bio-bay kayak tour.  The tour included kayaking out into the bay at night and exploring the beauty of the bay’s bioluminescence.  The glow is caused by the motion in the water disturbing the tiny single-celled organisms that populate the bay.  The tour guides were knowledgeable and shared a lot of information with us.  We got to get out of our kayaks and do someswimming in the glowing water. It is truly an amazing experience.  There are only a few bioluminescent bays remaining in the world, and it’s a real privilege to have the brightest one handy to play in any time I feel like it!

Next, I took a daytime kayak tour through the mangrove trees surrounding the bio-bay. We kayaked into the bio-bay and went through a small opening in its border. The opening led to a beautiful tunnel through the mangroves. If you have a waterproof camera, I would strongly recommend taking it with you because it makes for some great photos.  This is a very relaxing tour; it is incredibly quiet once you’re in the tunnel of the mangroves. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys kayaking and wants to explore the natural beauty of Vieques.

The last tour was to Tres Palmitas.  We kayaked into a secluded bay area with a pretty beach and swam and snorkeled. The snorkeling was great because the water was really clear and there were lots of different sea creatures to see. This tour was a really nice mix of kayaking,   snorkeling and swimming.  I’d do it again!

I’m so glad things slowed down enough with wedding planning that I could do all of these tours.  I’d like to thank Abe from Abe’s Snorkeling for having me as his guest.  His crew did a great job of making the tour fun and sharing their knowledge with me. They offer a whole range of other tours that are a great way to relax and have fun, whether it’s just you or a group of your wedding guests as well.

Make sure you block time to check out the bio-bay and more while you’re here.  If you’re only exploring on land, you’re missing half of the island!

That’s all for now!
