Hey there everybody!
It’s Patronales Week here on Vieques Island — that means it’s the celebration of the island’s patron saint and there are lots of street parties and a carnival that goes all night all week long. Complete with fireworks. Lots and lots of fun. Not a great week for weddings because of the crowds, but that always gives me a chance to try to find the top of my desk. One of the things I realized while hunting for a clear, flat surface was that I haven’t posted any new client testimonials to my web page in ages and ages — it’s just because we don’t have time. But that makes it look like I haven’t had any new clients and I hate that — so I decided to share a few favorites with you. So let’s start today with something that’s in “theme” with celebrating Patronales — a testimonial from Dana Nelson and Bret Eikenhorst, married on Vieques Island on St. Patrick’s Day of this year.
“Ok brides… Listen up!!! This is important. I am going to tell you everything you need to know if you are even considering having a wedding or event in Vieques…
First of all, if you hire Sandy, then everything will be arranged for you. She can do as much or as little as you would like. Having a planner is essential for planning an event on an island off the coast of another island!!! The only other wedding planner on the island when I started planning my wedding was contacted at the same time Sandy was. By the time she got back to me, Sandy had been hired for several months and had planned a large portion of my 4-5 day agenda on the island. Sandy knows the islands very well, and has great relationships with all the local vendors/hotels/restaurants/etc.
To be fair, my husband and I literally did everything under the sun that we could possibly do to thwart her efforts to help me, including miss like 28 conference calls, send excell sheets back to her on notepad or in the body of an email, lost my cell phone for an entire month before the wedding, and generally WASTED a lot of her time blabbering about whatever. All this being said, Sandy managed to pull off the wedding spectacularly!!! I am sure if I had asked her for a LEPRECHAUN to be at my St. Patty’s day wedding, she would have gotten me one… Oh wait…she DID!!! My husband (a professional pastry chef) even asked her to use his recipes for our cakes and she was able to get the cakes made the way we asked and they were delicious!!!!
So, to sum up, Sandy rocks!!! Hire her!!! I mean really, let’s face it honey… even if you are a pro planner or very organized, Sandy can help you make it perfect.
Hacienda Tamarindo (Sandy’s recommendation cuz she got married there too) is where you want to stay, if you can afford it. It is a little pricy in the high season, but the staff there is incredible, the place is gorgeous, and the views are amazing! This is a quiet, secluded place, that has real character! Oh, and the breakfast is delectible. I loved the food there – something different every day that you can count on to be delicious.
Having a beach party is a great idea before a wedding! It was the perfect way for all of us to get to know each other and be lighthearted.
Catering it was a great idea too! You definately to take Sandy’s suggestions about who to use to cater all of your wedding events! The food is amazing. My family and friends are still talking about how yummy the food was at our reception.
Yanira!!! Oh Yanira! SHE is who you want to do your hair and make up. My maid of honor handed her a picture of an updo and she replicated it perfectly. Then she made me look even more beautiful than I ever have before! She was very gentle, professional, and helpful.
So…once you have hired Sandy, DON’T WORRY!!!! She knows who to call for everything you need and no matter how hard you try to torture her, if anything happens or goes wrong, Sandy can probly fix it before you even know about it!!!”
Dana Nelson, Weddings in Vieques Bride on March 17th, 2012
Gosh, I miss working closely with her. Dana goes down in history as one of my most creative and fun clients to work with, altough I could have killed her when I finally met her assistant at the wedding events and found out she had been begging Dana for my number for months. Dana is a very busy, successful vetrinarian and she got behind on her planning and her assistant would have loved to help — if that’s you, don’t be afraid to accept help. Really, it’s okay to delegate some stuff. For example, you’ll want to choose your own registry gifts, but you can have somebody else research all the policies to help you choose which is the best store for you (some give you 30 days to exchange for full value, some give you six months — do your homework, or have someobody else do it for you). That’s just one little example. 🙂
Many thanks to Dana and Bret and all the other clients who have made Weddings in Vieques successful five years running. We appreciate your business and your referrals more than you can know. Please keep us in the loop when you have babies (Leif and Chad, 5/25/08 are due with twins any day now) and stay in touch so we can hook up when you come back to visit on future anniversaries. I’m wrapping up this posting with my favorite picture from Dana’s wedding — the moment she arrived back at the hotel for her reception and saw Alissa the Leprechaun waiting to greet her. The look on her face was priceless even though she was expecting it.
