Happy New Year!
Or Prospero Ano Nuevo, as they say down here. But I’ve recently been informed that “ano” without a tilde over the “n” doesn’t mean year so I’m probably posting dirty messages on the Internet in my quest to bring you all good tidings! It’s hard to believe that 2009 has come to a close already. I mean, seriously folks — when did it get here? Time goes faster as we get older — that is soooo not just something old people say, it’s really true. And it seems like the more weddings I have on the calendar, the faster the weeks fly by. We had a banner year at Weddings in Vieques, and we successfully launched Weddings in Culebra as well. It’s hard to believe we’ve been doing this for more than two years already!
As with all things that are worth it, building a wedding planning business on two tiny islands off another Caribbean island was a lot of work. We’ve put in more time and energy than we ever imagined we would — I remember when our goal was to do two weddings a month. LOL. Now the rule is no more than two weddings per weekend. My, how things have changed. And with every wedding we do, we learn something new. Sometimes we’re just streamlining our processes, but sometimes we learn things we never thought we’d ever have to know. And those are the interesting ones. I won’t tell you how we learned to sort the lights differently to expedite setups, or how we bought our own buffet tablecloths that reach all the way to the floor since the rental company refused to carry them — I’m going to tell you some of the REALLY GOOD lessons learned. Let’s just hope all my former clients aren’t reading this!

Hello Everybody!
I made it — I actually did all 24 nuggets of wedding wisdom, as promised. That means you guys will cut me some slack in January, right? Just kidding! But because I did live up to my promise, I’m going to abuse the privilege and blog about my favorite topic today — why the newly-engaged couple should absolutely, positively choose Vieques Island or Culebra Island, the jewels of the Spanish Virgin Islands, for their Caribbean destination weddings!

Hi Everybody!
Well, it’s already started. For some reason, the guys suddenly get up the nerve to propose during the holiday season and now I’m getting all kinds of email and phone calls from newly-engaged young ladies who can’t wait to get started with their wedding planning. Yay! 2010 is going to be a busy year! And that’s exactly the point of today’s blog — choose your wedding date as quickly as you can in order to increase your chances of getting that date!

Hola Mis Novias!
I know that some of you just cannot resist the Jimmy Choo or Manolo Blahnik brand on your tootsies for your wedding day, but if you’re getting married on the beach, or in the Caribbean in general, that can be difficult. Think about where you’re going to be walking and dancing. Should you be in high heels or flats?

Hi Brides and Grooms!
If you’re just about ready to mail your wedding invitations, don’t. Unless you absolutely have to mail them this month, do not mail your wedding invitations at the height of the holiday card sending season.

Hello Bride and Grooms!
When you first get engaged and start planning your wedding, you’re going to decide whether you want a DJ or a band. If you choose a DJ, you have to start working on a DJ playlist at some point in your planning process. I suggest you start a list from the beginning so when you think of a song you really want to hear, you remember to put it on the playlist. You should play whatever you like at your own wedding — and you should have a Do Not Playlist for all those songs you don’t like but that someone always requests (electric slide, chacha slide, we are family, etc.). But the most important part of the playlist is your first dance song.

Hi there!
Okay, here’s a tip I learned from my own jeweler back in Washington, DC. And it’s an important one, so listen up. Take off your wedding rings every night and put them on your ring stand — don’t sleep in them!

Hello to all the Newly-Engaged or About-To-Be-Engaged Brides Out There! This one is for you!
The minute you get your engagement ring - get in insured!!! And as soon as it’s insured, go out and buy yourself a couple of good ring stands if you don’t already have them. You might receive one or two as engagements gifts — that’s why I have two Waterford ones. But if nobody gives you one, go out and buy one today!

Hello Brides and Grooms!
Does anybody really worry about properly preserving their bouquet anymore? I did five years ago, but none of my clients has wanted to do it so I haven’t dealt with it again since my own wedding. It cost me a fortune. But it’s in an absolutely beautiful shadow box — a pave design, in fact — mounted on the wall at my mother’s house back in the DC area. It was much too fragile to move to Puerto Rico. Looking back, was is worth the more than $500 I spent to have it made? Probably not. Today’s tip — think carefully before spending money on bouquet preservation from a destination wedding.
