Say NO to the Dress — Unless It’s the Wedding Gown of Your Dreams and It’s What YOU Want

November 22nd, 2009 Sandy Malone

Hola Mis Amigas!

I never cease to be amazed by how many television shows (mostly reality shows) are all about weddings nowadays!  Down here in Vieques we have two sat TV options and we get Direct TV — that means we don’t get the WE network or Bravo (Yes, as a matter of fact, I am in Top Chef withdrawal).  While I was back in the states visiting in September, I couldn’t believe how many wedding shows were on those networks alone.  When you combine those with that ones that we actually do get down here, I’m either really impressed or horrified.  I can’t decide which.  As a wedding planner, I suppose I should be thrilled that, even in a difficult economy, people are still so obsessed with throwing big weddings and all that goes on behind the scenes.  As a television consumer, I wonder what other people are watching on TV these days.  Surely not everyone is sucked into Bridezillas, Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?, Married Away, Platinum Weddings, Wildest Wedding Videos, Flowers Uncut, Cake Boss, and my new favorite, Say Yes to the Dress.  Actually, I think Say Yes to the Dress might actually have some merit, though.  And that’s what today’s topic is — choosing the wedding gown of your dreams without getting gouged, bullied or pushed into buying something that you really didn’t want.

8 Awesome Alternatives to a Traditional Guest Book for Your Caribbean Destination Wedding

November 15th, 2009 Sandy Malone

Hola Mis Novias y Mis Novios!

As I was cleaning out a storage tub in our laundry room last night, I came across the guest book from my own wedding five years ago.  I sat down and paged through it — it’s actually interesting because I had two wedding receptions, one here in Vieques and another back in DC.  And I was anal enough that I actually wrote in all the wedding gift info in the back of the book so I’ll know forever and always who gave me which Waterford pitcher.  After spending about five minutes looking at it, I asked Bill if he wanted to see it.  He looked at me like I was nuts and declined.  So back into the airtight Rubbermaid tub it went, and there it will likely remain until the next time I am cleaning out the laundry room.  If I had it to do over again, I would not do a “traditional” guest book at my wedding.  I would do something much more fun and creative and useful that I would be able to see on a regular basis and that would remind me of my fabulous wedding weekend.  And that is the topic of today’s blog – fabulous alternatives to using a traditional sign-in guest book at your island wedding!

High School Sweethearts Brianna and Matt Tie the Knot on Playa Martineau

November 12th, 2009 Sandy Malone

Hello Everybody!

I know, I know… I’m behind in writing again.  But I have an excellent excuse.  It has been a couple of very, very busy weeks here in Vieques.  First and foremost, Brianna Grant and Matt Rothman got married at sunset on November 7th on the beach in front of a posh waterfront villa while 50 friends and family from their hometown in Maine witnessed their special moment.
